Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) [-CH2-CH(OH)-]n is a powder of white or yellowish colour.
Depending on saponification number and properties of polyvinylacetate the following grades of PVA are available: 16/1; 20/1.
Having a number of important and specific features (all-purpose adhesive and binding properties, resistant to oxidation, weatherproof, etc.) PVA is widely used in various applications:
for polyvinylacetales synthesis as an emulsifier and inhibitor at vinylacetate and other monomers emulsion polymerization; for glue production as it is and in mixture with a gilter for leather, tissue, paper, label gluing; for natural, manmade and synthetic fibre and yarn sizing; as a binding material for fine molding powder production used for ceramic and core mixtures for casting; as a component in light sensetive printing solutions for mold and printing board cyclographic stereotype manufacturing; as an additive to chalk suspension.
PVA is not toxic, combustible. Ignition temperature is 205°C, selfignition temperature is 344°C. At PVA heating above 180°C carbon oxide, formaldehyde and acetic acid vapours are evolved into air.
